In The Vineyard The 2008 Summer and Autumn were difficult times in the vineyard. On the 1st December 2007 we decided to drop our white varieites on the ground as we felt we did not have enough water to mature the 2008 whitegrape crop. We used what little water we had to maintain the vines and mature a small crop of Shiraz. This management plan worked well and we are most pleased with the rich flavours and colour of the wine in the barrel.
We have now received good rain and are looking optimistically forward to the coming seasons.
In the Winery The 2008 Shiraz is currently maturing in a combination of American and French oak barriques whilst the 2005 and 2006 Shiraz is maturing in the bottle. Our 2006 Late Harvest (predominantly Orange Muscat) was released in February and has proved popular with all who try it. Our current Shiraz release is the 2004 Shiraz which was awarded a silver medal at the 2005 Winewise Awards and the following comments were recorded in the August Edition of Winewise. 'Highly Recommended. This is a big, rich Shiraz that makes up in flavour what it lacks in finesse. It's packed with blackberry, spice and cedar flavours. The tannins need time to soften. $18 $$VALUE$$'.
The 2005 Shiraz will be available for tasting at the winery over the Queen's Birthday Weekend in June. In his 2008 Australian Wine Companion, James Halliday rated our 2005 Shiraz at 4.5 glasses out of 5 glasses (90 out of a possible 100 points) and described the wine as 'clear medium-bodied blackberry and black cherry fruit, with a nice touch of spice; fine tannins and integrated oak; fruit-accented style'.
Local Events Over the Queen’s Birthday weekend (7th – 9th June 2008) we will participate in the Glenrowan Wine Region’s ‘Trails, Tastings and Tales’ weekend. Wine lovers are invited to visit Goorambath, Baileys of Glenrowan, Booth’s Taminick Cellars, Auldstone Cellars, Morrison's of Glenrowan, and Granite Range Estate. At the first winery visited, participants receive a passport which, after receiving a stamp at each winery, entitles entry into the draw for prizes including a number of mixed dozen wines from the Glenrowan Region.
All wineries have extra attractions over the three days of the long weekend. This year each winery will feature food that 'inspired by the vine'. At Goorambath, apart from tasting our range of exciting wines, we will have occasional music and mini golf for the kids. We will also serve orange muscat mud cake for morning and afternoon tea.
The Glenrowan Vignerons' Annual Dinner will be held at Baileys of Glenrowan on Saturday 4 October 2008. Goormambath Winery will be making up a table so please contact us if you would like to join us for this prestigious event.
We look forward to catching up with you at the winery some time soon. Best wishes Geoff and Lyn
